In a landmark moment for space exploration, four astronauts launched from Florida on Wednesday aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission — the first crewed journey toward the Moon in decades and a critical step in plans to return humans to the lunar surface.

The mission lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, where tens of thousands gathered to witness the historic event. The towering 32-storey Space Launch System rocket, carrying the Orion capsule, ignited just before sunset, sending a plume of white vapor across clear skies as it ascended into orbit.

On board were three American astronauts — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch — along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew will travel around the Moon and back, testing systems essential for future lunar landings.

Artemis II represents NASA’s most ambitious human spaceflight since the Apollo era and underscores a renewed global push to explore the Moon, with the United States aiming to establish a sustained presence amid growing competition from China.

The mission is seen as a defining step toward landing astronauts on the lunar surface later this decade, ushering in a new chapter in space exploration.
