At least 10 Nigerien soldiers were killed in an ambush near the Burkina Faso border, the Nigerien army announced late Wednesday.

The attack occurred on Monday near Takzat village in western Niger during a military operation, according to a statement broadcast on public television.

In response, the army launched counter-operations the following day, killing around 15 assailants.

This latest assault follows a similar attack in December, where 10 soldiers were killed and seven others wounded near the Burkina Faso border.

The Tillaberi region, home to Niger’s Bankilare and Tera areas, has faced persistent attacks since 2017. Armed groups linked to terrorist organizations continue to operate in the volatile “three borders” zone between Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
