Authorities in Azerbaijan say drones launched from Iran struck Nakhchivan International Airport and nearby areas on Thursday, injuring two civilians and causing damage to several facilities.

According to the Azerbaijani state news agency AZERTAC, one of the drones hit the airport building while another exploded near a school in the village of Shekarabad in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Officials in Baku strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a blatant violation of international law and a direct threat to regional stability. The government demanded an immediate explanation from Tehran and called for measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan summoned Iran’s ambassador, Mojtaba Demirchilou, and delivered a formal protest note, stressing Azerbaijan’s right to take necessary countermeasures to defend its territory and civilian infrastructure.

The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, as Iran has carried out a series of missile and drone attacks on several countries since last weekend, following joint strikes by the United States and Israel on targets inside Iranian territory.
