Governor Mohammed Umaru-Bago of Niger State has called for a comprehensive review of education syllabuses to enhance school enrolment and tackle the rising menace of out-of-school children in the northern region.

Speaking on Tuesday at a National Colloquium in Minna, held in honor of literary icon Mohammed Dzukogi’s 60th birthday, the governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to addressing education challenges in the state.

“The state government is encouraging parents to enrol their children into schools. Stakeholders in education must cooperate with the government to ensure every child is in school,” Umaru-Bago stated.

Describing the out-of-school children crisis as a regional problem requiring urgent attention, the governor stressed the need to align solutions with global educational demands.

As part of his administration’s efforts, Umaru-Bago revealed plans to merge vocational and technical schools and renovate over 200 schools across Niger State.

He lauded Mohammed Dzukogi for his contributions to literature and youth development, particularly through the Hilltop Model Arts Foundation and organizing the Arts Festival in honor of the late wife of Ibrahim Aliyu.

“Dzukogi has immortalized himself through his good works. We must collaborate to change the narrative about Niger State and consider renaming institutions to honor individuals who have paid their dues,” the governor said.

During the event, the governor reiterated the importance of a 30-year development plan for Niger State to ensure sustainable growth.

Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Mohammed Yahaya, celebrated Dzukogi as a literary giant and an inspiration to many. He also commended Governor Umaru-Bago’s efforts to revamp the state’s educational sector.

The highlight of the colloquium was the launch of four books authored by Dzukogi, with Umaru-Bago announcing a donation of ₦40 million on behalf of the state government and an additional ₦10 million from his family.
