The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, has claimed responsibility for the execution of 214 hostages following a hijacking of the Jaffar Express train in Balochistan province.

The incident began on March 11, 2025, when the train, carrying approximately 440 passengers from Quetta to Peshawar, was ambushed near Dhadar. The attackers reportedly detonated explosives on the tracks, forcing the train to halt inside a tunnel, before opening fire and seizing control.

Initial reports indicated that the BLA had taken 214 hostages, including military personnel, and had threatened to execute them if their demands for the release of Baloch political prisoners were not met within 48 hours. Despite negotiations, the standoff escalated, leading to a rescue operation by Pakistani security forces. The operation resulted in the deaths of 33 militants and the rescue of over 190 hostages. However, at least 21 passengers and four paramilitary officers were killed during the assault.

The BLA’s claim of executing 214 hostages has not been independently verified, and official sources report lower casualty figures. The incident underscores the ongoing unrest in Balochistan, a region plagued by insurgency and calls for greater autonomy. The province has witnessed a significant rise in militant activity, with attacks increasing by 84% in 2024.

The Pakistani government has condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of infrastructure projects in the region, many of which are part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
