Barcelona Commuter Train Crash Kills One, Injures Dozens Days After Deadly Spain Rail Disaster

At least one person was killed and 37 others injured on Tuesday after a Barcelona commuter train derailed when a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks, Spanish regional authorities said.

The crash occurred near the town of Gelida, about 35 minutes outside Barcelona in the northeastern region of Catalonia. Emergency services said five people were seriously injured, while several others sustained minor to moderate injuries. Twenty ambulances were deployed to the scene, and the injured were taken to three nearby hospitals.

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, ADIF, said the collapse of the containment wall was likely caused by heavy rainfall that swept across the region in recent days. Commuter rail services along the affected line were suspended.

The incident came just two days after a separate and far deadlier train collision in southern Spain killed at least 42 people and injured dozens more, plunging the country into three days of national mourning. Emergency workers were still recovering bodies from Sunday’s wreckage on Tuesday.

Despite Spain’s reputation for having one of Europe’s most advanced high-speed rail networks, commuter rail services have long faced reliability challenges. However, serious accidents remain rare across both systems.

Authorities continue to investigate both incidents, as Spain grapples with renewed concerns over rail safety following one of the country’s deadliest transport tragedies in decades.
