Bauchi Shuts Down 39 Unregistered Private Colleges of Education

The Bauchi State government has closed 39 private colleges of education due to their lack of proper registration and inadequate infrastructure. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Mrs. Lydia Tsammani, during a news conference in Bauchi on Thursday.

Tsammani revealed that the affected institutions lacked approval from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and were operating in makeshift facilities, often sharing space with primary schools. “These colleges have no tangible infrastructure and rely on borrowed teachers, some of whom are primary and secondary school teachers,” she stated.

The ministry has issued a six-month notice to unregistered colleges with partial infrastructure to complete their registration or face further sanctions.

Additionally, Tsammani emphasized that the 12 colleges operating with NCCE approval would only be allowed to continue after engaging qualified staff and paying their registration fees to the ministry. “They must admit only qualified candidates and ensure continuous upgrades of school facilities. It’s alarming that some still use analogue typewriters in this digital era,” she added.
