At least 30 people have died and over 80,000 have been evacuated after torrential rains triggered widespread flooding in China’s capital, according to state media.

The downpours, which began over the weekend, have caused severe disruptions across Beijing and surrounding areas. The city’s municipal flood control headquarters confirmed the fatalities late Monday night, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The worst-hit area is Miyun District, located in the city’s northeastern suburbs. Huairou District to the north and Fangshan in the southwest have also suffered significant damage. Authorities have reported road closures, power outages in over 130 villages, and continuing rescue operations.

Local outlet Beijing Daily described the rains as “continuous extreme heavy rainfall” that led to “major disasters.” Officials have urged residents to monitor weather alerts and avoid high-risk areas.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on emergency responders to prepare for worst-case scenarios and accelerate evacuation efforts in flood-prone regions.

In nearby Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing, a landslide in a village near the city of Chengde claimed four lives. Eight others remain missing, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
