Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden has approved an order granting the Republic of Cyprus access to three critical U.S. military programs, Greek media reported on Thursday.

The programs include the Foreign Military Sales (FMS), Excess Defense Articles (EDA), and Title 10 Security Cooperation programs, according to ERTNews.

This development marks a significant milestone in U.S.-Cyprus relations, as it enhances bilateral cooperation, strengthens operational compatibility, and fortifies security ties between the two nations.

Under the FMS program, Cyprus can acquire U.S. defense articles, services, and training. The EDA program allows Cyprus to obtain surplus U.S. defense equipment, while the Title 10 program enables participation in initiatives designed to develop the capabilities of foreign security forces.

Officials in Washington have expressed strong support for the move, viewing it as a step toward establishing a new security framework in the region, with Cyprus playing a pivotal role.

The decision follows a series of collaborative efforts between the two nations. In October 2024, Cyprus and the U.S. initiated a Strategic Dialogue, and in September, they signed a defense cooperation roadmap for 2024-2029.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has been a vocal advocate for closer U.S.-Cyprus ties and has openly supported Cyprus joining NATO. In December 2024, Christodoulides stated that Cyprus would join NATO “tomorrow” if given the opportunity.
