The body of Alexandra Martine Diengo Lumbayi, a 21-year-old Congolese student at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, was discovered in the St. Maurice River on Tuesday morning.
Lumbayi had been missing since October 2 after last being seen on Saint-Quentin Island.
Her disappearance prompted a large search effort led by local authorities, students, and members of the Congolese, Cameroonian, and Senegalese communities.
On Tuesday at around 10:20 a.m., a kayaker found her body near the Kruger Wayagamack property, with the coroner later confirming her identity.
Lumbayi’s mother, Rosemine Ndjondo, had made emotional public pleas for assistance, sharing her grief on social media. “I can’t eat, sleep, or even close my eyes anymore,” she said in a tearful TikTok video.
Quebec provincial police are investigating the circumstances of Lumbayi’s death. The tragedy has shaken both the student body and the wider community, with many expressing heartfelt condolences to her family. The case has drawn attention to the strong bonds between international students and their local communities.
