Boko Haram Overruns Military Base in Borno

Boko Haram insurgents have launched a deadly attack on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in the deaths of dozens of soldiers and vigilantes.

The attack, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday, also saw the insurgents seizing weapons and setting buildings ablaze.

Security sources confirmed the incident to reporters on Monday, describing it as one of the most devastating assaults on the base, which has endured over 100 attacks in the past. A source stated, “Many soldiers and vigilantes were killed. The insurgents took away all the armaments and set operational vehicles and buildings on fire.”

The attackers reportedly utilized a surveillance drone to assess the base before the assault. “Initially, we believed the drone was part of a military operation,” the source added.

While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, more than 12 bodies have been recovered so far. Sources indicate that the insurgents launched the attack from Mandara Gau in Biu Local Government Area, approximately 25 kilometers away.

“They have taken over a mango plantation belonging to a former state commissioner, which now serves as their hideout,” another security source disclosed.

The growing use of drones by the insurgents has become a concern, with recent drone deployments reported in areas between Chibok and Damboa. “Just before Christmas, they attacked another base using aerial surveillance, injuring six soldiers,” a security official noted.

As of the time of filing this report, the military is yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack.
