Botswana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Philda Kereng, has called for enhanced trade cooperation between Botswana and Nigeria, emphasizing the need to harness economic strengths for mutual growth.
Speaking during Botswana’s 58th National Day celebration in Abuja, Kereng identified Nigeria as a crucial partner since the two countries signed a cultural and diplomatic agreement on October 17, 2018. She stressed the importance of advancing business ties, particularly in people-to-people trade.
“I want us to join hands and lead the continent of Africa, leveraging the economic strengths of both nations,” she said, noting Nigeria’s resilience and vibrant trade culture.
Kereng highlighted the potential for collaboration in the creative sector, including film, food, fashion, and music, where Nigeria holds a leading position. She urged both countries to utilize their talents and business connections to boost trade relations.
The High Commissioner also expressed concerns about the current low trade volume between the two nations, urging efforts to explore opportunities in cosmetics, textiles, livestock farming, and beef production, areas where Botswana has expertise.
“Nigeria can learn from Botswana’s livestock farming and beef production, which we export to European countries,” Kereng added, expressing optimism about future collaborations.
Similarly, Namibia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Humphrey Geiseb, commended Botswana’s economic progress, particularly its diamond industry, which he described as a significant asset for Africa.
