Botswana to Hold General Elections on October 30
Botswana will hold its general elections on Wednesday, October 30, President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced during a televised address.
Masisi stated that the Independent Electoral Commission had completed its preparations for the elections. He also declared October 30 and October 31 as public holidays to encourage higher voter participation, urging citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
The current parliament will be dissolved on September 5, and presidential candidate nominations are scheduled for September 28.
Masisi, who is seeking reelection under the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), leads a party that has governed the country since its independence on September 30, 1966. Other parties contesting the elections include the Umbrella for Democratic Change, Botswana Congress Party, and Botswana Patriotic Front.
A total of 61 National Assembly seats and 609 local council seats are up for grabs. Any party securing at least 31 National Assembly seats will win the election.
