Bricklayer jailed 6 months for stealing bags of cement

An Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Isabo, on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Bolu Adeolu to six months imprisonment for stealing six bags of cement.

The Magistrate, Dr B.O. Ilo held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Ilo, however, asked the convict to pay N25,000 as fine in the alternative.

Adeolu was convicted on a count charge of stealing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the convict committed the offence about 5.40 a.m. at Idaba Community in Abeokuta.

Olu-Balogun said the convict entered the site of the complainant, one Mrs Salimot Odu and stole six bags of cement valued N55,200.

He said that the convict also stole a bag of charcoal valued N61,200 from the site.

“The convict took the stolen items and hide them inside a bush.

“When the complainant came to the site and found the items missing, she informed one of the workers, who helped to search around the site and found the items,” the prosecutor said.

Olu-Balogun said that the convict was caught when came to pick the stolen items from where he hid them and he was arrested.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun 2006.
