Bulgaria Postpones Parliamentary Elections After President Blocks Caretaker Government
Bulgaria’s parliamentary elections, originally scheduled for October 20, have been indefinitely postponed following President Rumen Radev’s refusal to sign a decree approving a new caretaker government.
The delay comes after a dispute over the proposed cabinet, particularly the decision by Radev’s nominee for caretaker prime minister, Goritsa Grancharova-Kozhareva, to retain Kalin Stoyanov as interior minister.
President Radev’s rejection of Grancharova-Kozhareva’s proposed lineup means that the current caretaker government, led by Dimitar Glavchev, will continue to govern until the parliament can present a new shortlist of candidates for the prime minister position.
The postponement has caused uncertainty in the country’s political landscape, as the prolonged tenure of the current caretaker government delays the formation of a new administration and the implementation of potential reforms. The indefinite postponement raises concerns about the stability of Bulgaria’s political process and the impact on the upcoming election cycle.
