Nigeria’s U-20 national football team, the Flying Eagles, suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their opening Group B match of the WAFU B U20 AFCON on Friday in Lome, Togo.
As defending champions, the Flying Eagles struggled to find their rhythm, failing to capitalize on key chances early in the game. Forward Kparobo Arierhi squandered a golden opportunity to put Nigeria ahead, sending his shot wide after breaking through on goal in the first half.
Burkina Faso quickly responded, with Nigerian goalkeeper Nathaniel Nwosu making a crucial save to keep the scoreline even. Despite efforts to control the game, the Flying Eagles failed to create clear scoring opportunities in the second half.
The deadlock was broken in the 66th minute when Burkina Faso’s Coulibaly Dramane capitalized on Nigeria’s inability to clear a set piece, scoring the match-winning goal.
With the loss, Nigeria must now secure a win in their final group stage match against Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
