The police on Thursday arraigned 37-year-old driver Chukwuebuka Ogbodo before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly knocking down a Lagos Waste Management Authority staff member.
The defendant, who resides at No. 37, Ile-Epo, Araromi, Badagry, Lagos State, is facing a three-count charge of reckless driving, driving without a valid driver’s licence and driving without vehicle particulars.
The prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 16 at about 2.16 p.m. opposite the Sesi Whingan office along the Badagry Expressway, Lagos.
Ekpo said the defendant allegedly drove a yellow Volkswagen bus with registration number BDG 142 XQ in a dangerous and reckless manner on the highway and knocked down one Oluwatoyin Olabanji, a LAWMA staff member, while she was sweeping the road.
He said the victim sustained fractures on both legs and other injuries.
“The defendant drove on a public highway without a valid driver’s licence.
“He also drove without valid vehicle particulars,” the prosecutor said.
According to him, the offences contravened Sections 14, 15 and 20 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two responsible sureties in like sum.
He ruled that one of the sureties must be a company director.
Layeni adjourned the case until March 26 for mention.
