The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), moving the tournament to later in the year after months of uncertainty over its schedule.

The competition, originally slated to take place from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco, will now be held from July 25 to Aug. 16.

In a statement released on Thursday, CAF said the decision followed consultations with the global football body, FIFA, and other key stakeholders to ensure the successful staging of the tournament.

“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 to July 25 to August 16,” the statement said.

CAF explained that the adjustment was made due to certain unforeseen circumstances, noting that the new dates would help guarantee a smooth and successful competition.

Preparations for the tournament are ongoing, with CAF expressing confidence that the event will be successfully organised.

Sixteen teams are expected to participate in the continental championship. Nigeria enters the competition as the defending champions and remains the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having won the title 10 times.
