California Wildfire Explodes, Now Largest in US

Thousands of firefighters are battling a rapidly expanding wildfire in northern California, which has become the largest in the US after doubling in size within 24 hours. The Park Fire has burned over 350,000 acres (141,640 hectares) approximately 144 km north of Sacramento, according to Cal Fire.

Despite expectations of cooler temperatures and more humid air, the fire remains 0 percent contained as of Saturday afternoon. It has destroyed 134 structures and prompted evacuation orders and warnings for multiple communities, including Paradise, which was devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire.

US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and has directed his team to support firefighting efforts. Authorities arrested a man suspected of starting the Park Fire by pushing a flaming car into a gully.

Nationwide, the National Interagency Fire Center reports that wildfires have burned over two million acres. In Oregon, the Durkee Fire has scorched more than 288,000 acres, and a firefighter died after a tanker crash near the Falls Fire.
