The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has lauded the courage and dedication of troops under Operation FASAN YAMMA for their unwavering efforts in tackling security challenges across Nigeria’s North-West region.

General Musa gave the commendation on Tuesday during a strategic Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) interactive session held at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto. Represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, the CDS praised the troops for their operational achievements while warning against complacency and acts of indiscipline.

“The battle is a just one, don’t sleep, because your enemies are not sleeping,” Musa said, stressing the need for vigilance and total adherence to regulations. “The 8 Division keeps coming up for praise. You deserve commendation and encouragement, your GOC and every officer under Operation FASAN YAMMA deserve accolades for job well done.”

He emphasized the importance of civil-military cooperation and maintaining a strong relationship with host communities. “Let people run to you, not away from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he added, underscoring the dual importance of firepower and public trust in the ongoing fight against insurgency and banditry.

The CDS also called for unity among security services and reiterated that synergy between the military and civilians is vital for sustainable peace.

Speaking earlier, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating it affirmed the Division’s people-centered approach to military operations.

“The CDS leadership philosophy reminds us that real success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical gains, but in winning the hearts and minds of our people,” Ajose noted.

He highlighted the moral obligation of the troops to act with empathy, discipline, and justice. “We are not from the sky. We have children, siblings, relatives, and we pray that all of you return home safely, not in coffins. Nigeria remains one. The bandits will not win. And our Armed Forces will not sleep,” he declared.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event also featured a sensitisation lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics aimed at enhancing professionalism and discipline. Other activities included medical outreach, sporting competitions, and media engagements designed to strengthen the bond between troops and their host communities.
