Evangelist Mrs. Mary Chijioke (née Thompson Ntong), a renowned human rights advocate and grassroots mobiliser, has been selected to receive the Excellence Award in Grassroots Advocacy & Social Impact at the 7th OurNigeria News Awards, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

The award, organised annually by OurNigeria News Magazine, recognises outstanding Nigerians whose work has significantly advanced national development. This year’s ceremony is expected to draw top government officials, diplomats, policymakers and influential personalities from across Africa and beyond.

Mrs. Chijioke’s selection is a recognition of over two decades of consistent service to humanity, particularly in the areas of women’s rights, child protection, conflict resolution and economic empowerment. Widely regarded as a unifying force in the South-South geopolitical zone, she has built a reputation as a fearless advocate for the vulnerable and a tireless promoter of peace and social justice.

Born into the Ntong family and a proud native of Abia State by marriage, Mrs. Chijioke has used her leadership platforms to foster unity across ethnic, religious and political divides. She currently serves as Director of Women Affairs (South-South) at the International Human Rights Protection Services, where she oversees regional initiatives aimed at protecting women and children from abuse, discrimination and social injustice. Her elevation to the regional role followed an impactful tenure as Director of the Rivers State Chapter.

In addition to her human rights work, she is the President of the Niger Delta Women Alliance (NDWA), championing the welfare, inclusion and political participation of women across the Niger Delta. She also serves as State Women Leader (Akwacross) for the Rivers State Chapter, coordinating the socio-political interests of Akwa Ibom and Cross River indigenes living in Rivers State.

A major highlight of her public service was her role as South-South Market Women Leader during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, where she acted as a key liaison between the Federal Government and market women across the region. In that capacity, she mobilised thousands of female traders, advocated for pro-poor economic policies and facilitated access to grants that strengthened local and regional economies.

Mrs. Chijioke is also the Founder of Women for Unity in Nigeria, a platform dedicated to promoting peace, national cohesion and mutual understanding among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. Her influence further extends to traditional and political leadership circles, having served as Deputy Women Leader of the South-South Chiefs, Elders and Political Leaders, ensuring women’s voices were represented in high-level consultations and decision-making processes.

Beyond public service, she is a devoted mother of six and a committed Evangelist, known for her dedication to the spiritual and moral upliftment of her community.

The 2026 award marks a re-nomination and renewed recognition of her enduring impact in grassroots advocacy and social development. Organisers of the award say the honour underscores her status as one of the South-South’s most consistent and influential female leaders, whose work continues to shape lives and strengthen communities.
