China Commends Nigeria’s Leadership Role in ECOWAS Stability Efforts

China has praised Nigeria’s leadership within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), acknowledging the country’s pivotal role in promoting stability and development across the sub-region.

In a joint statement issued following Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s strategic position in West Africa and the nation’s contributions toward regional peace.

The visit, aimed at “Establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Building a High-Level China-Nigeria Community with a Shared Future,” highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in enhancing regional security and fostering cooperation across national borders.

“China supports Nigeria’s leading role in addressing regional affairs, including the fight against terrorism and resolving conflicts through dialogue,” the statement said. It further emphasized China’s recognition of Nigeria’s efforts in advancing peace, democracy, and good governance in the region.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding peace and security in West Africa, including volatile areas like the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea. China also urged the international community to avoid turning the region into a battleground for geopolitical competition, advocating for collaboration over confrontation.

The statement underscored China’s support for Africa’s flagship projects aimed at cross-national and cross-regional cooperation, further solidifying its partnership with Nigeria in advancing development and regional integration.
