A landslide in Jinping village, Yibin, southwest China’s Sichuan province, has left one person dead and 28 others missing, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

More than 900 emergency personnel are combing through debris to locate survivors after the landslide, which struck at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Saturday. The disaster was triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall and underlying geological factors, according to local authorities.

President Xi Jinping has directed authorities to prioritize rescue efforts and minimize casualties, state media reported. Two individuals have been pulled to safety, while video footage from state broadcaster CCTV shows rescuers navigating the wreckage with flashlights in the dark.

China has experienced a series of extreme weather events in recent months, with record-breaking heat and severe floods affecting various regions. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of such disasters to climate change.

Authorities have pledged continued efforts to locate the missing and provide necessary assistance to affected families.
