China, Nigeria Foster Cultural Ties with Traditional Fashion Show in Abuja

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria honoured the top ten traditional models from both Nigeria and China during a cultural fashion show in Abuja on Sunday, celebrating their role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage through fashion.

The China-Nigeria fashion event, co-hosted by the China Cultural Centre and the China General Chamber of Commerce, aimed to strengthen cultural relations between the two countries by showcasing the richness and beauty of traditional clothing.

The runway featured an array of garments, from the elegant Chinese qipao to Nigeria’s vibrant ankara and agbada, illustrating the deep-rooted cultural legacies of both nations.

Mr. Li Xuda, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, remarked that fashion goes beyond aesthetics; it serves as a powerful medium of storytelling and cultural expression. He emphasized that by celebrating these models, China and Nigeria reaffirm their commitment to preserving their heritage and fostering unity.

“Our goal is to uphold cultural legacies and strengthen ties between China and Nigeria,” said Li. He added that with the upcoming 2024 FOCAC summit, the event showcased a mutual spirit of cooperation and cultural exchange.

Li also announced plans to promote Nigerian fashion in China and establish training initiatives that will enable Nigerian designers to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts.

Mr. Muhammed Suleiman, President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, expressed optimism for future collaborations, foreseeing a growing platform for Nigerian designers to present their work on an international stage.

Among the awardees was Miss Sarafina Christopher, recognized for her dedication to sustainable fashion and her commitment to honoring her Hausa heritage. She thanked China for its continued support in fostering cultural exchanges and emphasized the importance of showcasing Nigerian traditional attire globally.

“This award is not just mine but for every Nigerian who values our culture,” Christopher said.

The top models received certificates, sashes, and cash prizes, symbolizing the strong bond of cultural appreciation between China and Nigeria.
