A recent survey reveals that a significant majority of Chinese Americans experience racial bias amid heightened tensions between the US and China over trade, supply chains, and geopolitical issues. The survey, conducted by the Committee of 100 and the University of Chicago’s NORC, found that 68% of Chinese Americans face at least one form of discrimination monthly, with 85% attributing it to their race, ethnicity, accent, or name.
Verbal insults were reported by 27% of respondents, while 21% faced physical threats or harassment. The “State of Chinese Americans Survey 2024” also highlighted mental health struggles within the community, particularly among youth and women. Out of 504 Chinese American adults surveyed, 50% reported feeling hopeless in the month before the poll, 43% experienced depression, and 39% felt worthless due to the ongoing discrimination.
