A cholera outbreak in Unity State has claimed 15 lives, with health officials confirming a total of 800 reported cases as of Wednesday.
The Acting Director General of the State Ministry of Health, Bany Makon, disclosed that four health facilities—Bentiu Town Hospital, Rubkona Hospital, Riohriak Payam PHCC, and the Bentiu IDP camp—recorded 63 cases and three deaths over the past two weeks.
Out of the 800 reported cases, 500 patients have recovered and been discharged, while 200 individuals remain under treatment. Makon noted that six counties have yet to report any cholera infections since the outbreak began.
Rubkona County Director Jal Kuol warned that deaths occurring at home remain underreported, further complicating efforts to assess the full impact of the epidemic.
Michael Tut, a resident of Bentiu Town, revealed that the outbreak has disrupted the community since the first case was reported on November 22 in Rubkona County. Tut called on state and national health authorities, as well as humanitarian partners, to supply sufficient medical resources to combat the epidemic.
The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Cholera Treatment Unit at Renk Hospital has been at the forefront of the response, treating 45 patients so far. Health officials and partners continue to emphasize the urgent need for resources to contain the outbreak.
