Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome has sustained a broken collarbone following a crash during the final stage of the UAE Tour on Sunday.
A CT scan confirmed a distal non-displaced fracture of his right clavicle, his team announced in a statement.
“Chris will be examined (on Monday) by an orthopaedic surgeon in Dubai to determine whether surgery will be required,” the statement added.
The British rider, who has won seven Grand Tours, has faced challenges regaining top form since a serious high-speed crash during training for the 2019 Criterium du Dauphiné.
Froome’s latest injury raises concerns about his fitness in what is expected to be his final season. In November, he expressed his hope for one last Tour de France appearance before retiring.
The 39-year-old, a two-time Olympic bronze medallist, also has two Vuelta a España titles and a Giro d’Italia victory. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Israeli Premier Tech team.
