Veteran CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour has revealed that her ovarian cancer has returned, three years after she was first diagnosed and treated in 2021.

The 67-year-old journalist, who has been absent from the air for the past month, disclosed her health update on the Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story podcast, where she spoke candidly about her ongoing treatment and urged women to prioritize their health.

“I have it again, but it’s being very well managed,” Amanpour said. “This is one of the things people must understand about some cancers — they can return, but with proper care, they can be managed.”

Amanpour explained that her cancer is classified as “stage 1/2,” meaning it was detected early but had “adhered to the pelvis.” She credited her quick response to recognizing the symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention.

“Part of the reason I got such quick care was because I listened to my body and went straight to the doctors,” she said. “I wanted to share my story to encourage others to do the same.”

Joined by gynaecological oncology consultant Dr. Angela George, Amanpour noted that she was “lucky” to experience pain symptoms, as ovarian cancer often shows few or no early signs.

Amanpour first announced her cancer diagnosis in 2021, revealing that she had undergone major surgery and several months of chemotherapy. At the time, she thanked her medical team and highlighted the importance of early detection and access to quality healthcare.

Now returning to treatment, Amanpour continues to use her platform to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, encouraging women to “educate themselves, get regular screenings, listen to their bodies, and insist their medical concerns are taken seriously.”

The respected international correspondent, who joined CNN in 1983, remains one of the network’s most prominent and admired journalists.
