Mr Umar Chuso, the Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, on Friday said that the command’s engagement with communities in the state was yielding significant results and enhancing public safety.

Chuso stated this in Gombe during a news conference to highlight the line-up of events for the commemoration of the 2026 National Police Day to be held in the state between Monday and Thursday.

He stated that the partnership between the police and the grassroots was not only improving public safety but enhancing crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and trust building.

He said that some of the successes recorded so far by the command in the fight against bandits and kidnappers in some parts of the state was as a result of the cooperation of residents.

He said he has been meeting critical stakeholders at the grassroots to get them to support the fight against crime through intelligence gathering.

“We have started seeing the results of those engagements whereby we are beginning to have more collaborations and synergy with the stakeholders to achieve our core mandate

“We are not unaware of what is happening in our neighbouring state and the possibility of a spill over.

“Some few weeks ago, we encountered some pockets of incidences in our boundary with Bauchi State around Alkaleri.

“The response we got through this community engagement and collaborations led to the results we achieved in neutralising three of the bandits, recovery of four operational motorcycles and two AK-47 Rifles.

“Without the cooperation of the community, we wouldn’t have achieved that and that is what we will continue to leverage on,” he said.

On the Police Day commemoration in the state, Chuso said several activities have been lined up which include sanitation, medical outreach, sensitisation on electoral violence and presentation of cheques to families of deceased officers.

He said that the command while commemorating the Day would strengthen the relationship between the police and the public towards reinforcing shared responsibility in building a safer society.

Chuso called on members of the public, community leaders, stakeholders, and the media to support the command, so that “together, we can strengthen cooperation, deepen trust, and build a safer and more secured Gombe State.”

The theme of the National Police Day 2026 is: ‘Community Partnership: Building Trust.’
