A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdullah Tekiyati-Irewole, has donated sanitary pads to 300 female students at Government Girls College, Katsina, as part of her personal Community Development Service (CDS) project.
Tekiyati-Irewole, who serves at Emirate Science Secondary School, organized the donation event on Sunday, along with a sensitization program aimed at educating the girls on menstrual hygiene.
During the event, she explained that her experience as a teacher revealed that many young girls in secondary school avoid attending classes when they begin menstruating due to a lack of awareness and access to sanitary products.
She recounted an instance where one of her top students stopped attending school, only to later discover that the girl was embarrassed about her period.
“I followed up with her after she missed school, and she confided that she was on her period and felt too shy to attend classes. This inspired me to launch this sensitization and support initiative,” Tekiyati-Irewole said.
The Katsina NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Sa’idu, represented by the Head of the CDS, Alhaji Sumaila Suleiman, praised the corps member’s initiative and urged other volunteers to follow her example.
He also called on parents and guardians, especially mothers, to provide proper guidance for their adolescent daughters during this important phase of their lives.
