The Area Court sitting in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, has dissolved the marriage between Bashirat Qodri and her husband, Solihu Musa, following allegations of jealousy and mistrust.
Qodri, who filed the case on Tuesday, asked the court to dissolve the Islamic marriage, seeking custody and maintenance of their only child.
“My husband asked me to leave his house before first week of September and I packed out.
“The place I wanted to rent had a condition, that I must be married, so I pleaded with the care taker to present himself as my husband.
“My husband started asking about me in the neighbourhood and when he discovered my apartment, he started harassing me that I am fornicating around,” she told the court.
In his response, Musa said he preferred divorce, alleging that his wife had moved into another man’s house with her three daughters.
He explained that Qodri had two daughters from a previous marriage and one daughter with him, claiming she was incapable of taking proper care of them.
Delivering judgment, Presiding Judge Idris Etsu ruled that since both parties no longer wished to remain together, there was no need to compel them to do so.
Etsu dissolved the marriage, granted custody of the child to Qodri, and ordered her to observe a three-month iddah period before remarrying.
The judge directed Musa to pay N10,000 monthly for the child’s upkeep, cover school fees and medical bills when necessary, and granted him unrestricted but reasonable access to his daughter.
