Court Orders Release of 24 Pro-Biafra Detainees in Ebonyi
A High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has discharged and acquitted 24 pro-Biafra agitators who had been held at the state’s correctional facility, bringing an end to their prolonged detention.
Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who represented the detainees, confirmed their release in a Facebook video on Thursday, July 17. The judgment was delivered by Justice I.P. Chima of the Abakaliki Judicial Division.
In his post titled “Freed at Last: A Triumph for Justice,” Ejiofor hailed the verdict as a victory for the rule of law and divine intervention. He stated that the Ebonyi State Correctional Service acted promptly in complying with the court order, leading to the immediate release of the detainees.
“With heads held high and hearts overflowing, they walked out of the correctional facility in victory, breaking into songs of praise and heartfelt thanksgiving to the Almighty God,” Ejiofor wrote.
He added that the ruling marked the end of a painful chapter and reaffirmed his commitment to defending the rights of the oppressed. “All glory to God, the ultimate defender of the oppressed. Great is His faithfulness,” he concluded.
The court’s decision has been widely praised by supporters of the Biafran cause, many of whom took to social media to celebrate what they described as long-overdue justice.
