A Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has ordered that two separate DNA tests be conducted to determine the paternity of Liam Aloba, the son of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga following an application filed by the singer’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba. The application sought legal backing to conduct a paternity test on the child, citing unresolved questions surrounding the boy’s biological relationship with the deceased.

The late Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was named as the respondent in the suit, which was filed under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.

In the application, Mr. Aloba requested that samples be taken from Mohbad’s remains at the Military Hospital in Yaba for the purpose of conducting a DNA test either in Lagos or another certified facility outside the state. Additionally, he sought permission to carry out a second test abroad at his own expense.

His legal team, led by Augustine Adegbemi of the chambers of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., argued that the test was necessary to provide clarity regarding Liam’s paternity—particularly as it concerns issues of maintenance and the child’s overall welfare.

The respondent, represented in court by Kabir Akingbolu, did not oppose the application. Consequently, the court granted the requests.

The court directed that:

  • The DNA tests be conducted in both an accredited Nigerian hospital and a facility abroad.
  • Both parties or their representatives must be present during the collection of samples.

The matter has been adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.

Mohbad, aged 26, died on September 12, 2023, after sustaining an injury on the back of his right arm. He reportedly developed a sudden convulsion after receiving treatment, including an injection, from a nurse at his home in Lekki. He died shortly afterward and was buried the next day.

Amid public outcry and suspicion surrounding his death, the Lagos State Government ordered an exhumation of his body on September 21, 2023, for autopsy. However, the first autopsy report, released on April 29, 2024, was inconclusive due to the advanced decomposition of internal organs.

A second autopsy was ordered in June 2024 by the Coroner, following a request from Mohbad’s family for an independent review.
