The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy (FMACTCE) has reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing young creatives and promoting self-reliance through innovative empowerment initiatives.

This commitment was demonstrated at a recent empowerment programme for schoolgirls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), organized as part of the activities to mark the 2024 National Creativity Week (NCW).

Held on Saturday at Stella Maris Schools, Life Camp, the event trained over 80 students in natural hair care, wig making, and the production of natural hair oils. With the theme “Transforming World, Promoting Sustainable Development,” the programme was a collaboration between the ministry and Photizo Life Foundation.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Raphael Oraeluno, Permanent Secretary of FMACTCE, highlighted the transformative power of creativity in shaping Nigeria’s future. Represented by Mrs. Ugochi Akudo-Nwosu, Director of Entertainment and Creative Economy, he said, “This occasion is directed towards discovering, nurturing, and showcasing the innate creative potentials in these young minds. Creativity can drive economic transformation, empower decision-making, and foster a better world.”

He emphasized the critical role of the creative economy in reducing poverty, unemployment, and youth restiveness while boosting wealth creation and national GDP.

Mrs. Adanna Enwezor, Founder of Photizo Life Foundation, delivered a presentation underscoring the economic opportunities in natural hair care. She stated, “Our mission is to celebrate African natural hair, advocate for local organic alternatives, and promote pride in our heritage and creativity.”

She added, “This training is about more than beauty; it’s about fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable practices in the hair care industry.”

Mrs. Ekemini Ladejobi, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Creative Arts, Culture, and Tourism of NAN, commended the programme and urged the students to take the training seriously. “The knowledge gained here will not only help you personally but also open doors to business opportunities,” she said.

Participants expressed excitement about the training. Arinlade Popoola, Assistant Head Girl of Stella Maris College, said, “Learning about my hair’s needs will boost my confidence and help me grow my natural hair.”

Christabel Akperobe, a JSS 1 student, remarked, “I’ve learned how to manage my hair better and understand the dangers of chemical treatments.”

The National Creativity Week celebrates creativity’s role in empowerment and development. It originates from the Creative Africa Initiative programme by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), launched in Ghana in 2008. Globally, it aligns with the World Creativity and Innovation Day.

The event highlighted the ministry’s drive to harness creativity for sustainable development and inspire young Nigerians to embrace their heritage while building a brighter, innovative future.
