At least 11 people have died in Mayotte following Cyclone Chido’s destructive passage through the French Indian Ocean territory. France’s Interior Ministry confirmed the fatalities on Sunday, warning that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.

Authorities reported that 246 individuals were injured, with nine critically wounded. The cyclone left a devastating impact, marking it as the most severe storm to hit Mayotte in nearly a century.

Cyclone Chido swept through the southeastern Indian Ocean, affecting neighboring regions like Comoros and Madagascar. On Saturday, Mayotte bore the brunt of the storm’s fury, with widespread damage reported.

The storm has since made landfall in Mozambique, where emergency officials have raised concerns for 2.5 million people at risk across two northern provinces.

Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as officials work to assess the full scale of the destruction.
