Dubai Man Faces Two-Year Jail Sentence Over Negative Review for Dog Grooming Business

A Belfast man faces up to two years in prison in Dubai after posting a negative Google review of a dog grooming business where he previously worked.

Craig Ballentine, 33, had accepted a role at a dog salon in Dubai last year but needed time off due to fibromyalgia. Despite providing his employer with a doctor’s note, Craig’s boss reportedly reported him to authorities as “absconded,” violating Dubai’s employment laws, his lawyers claim. This led to his job termination, a travel ban, and financial struggles as he fought to clear his record.

Upon returning to Northern Ireland, Craig posted a review detailing his experience with the grooming center. But during a recent trip back to the UAE for a short vacation, he was detained under the UAE’s strict cybercrime laws on charges of slander. Now, he faces imprisonment and is stuck in the UAE, unable to resume his work as a support worker for people with autism.

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, condemned the situation, saying, “The UAE’s cybercrime laws allow complainants to bring charges even without evidence of the post. Often, these cases turn into an extortion tactic.”

Stirling added that the case has caused severe distress for Craig’s family. “His mother is beside herself with worry. Craig just wants to return home,” she said.

Efforts are underway to secure diplomatic intervention, as Stirling has appealed to Northern Ireland’s political representatives to advocate for Craig’s release.
