Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Oluwaseun Okpebholo, has taken a firm stand against child trafficking and unsafe migration, spearheading the rescue and reintegration of a vulnerable teenage girl, Iwinosa, who had fallen victim to exploitation.

The intervention, which drew praise from state officials and rights advocates, ensures Iwinosa will now receive comprehensive support, including access to healthcare, education, psychosocial rehabilitation, and skills training.

Speaking on the broader issue, Mrs. Okpebholo highlighted the dangerous social pressures pushing many young people—especially in Edo State—toward risky migration routes. She challenged families and communities to end the narrative of “Edo people running away” and instead invest in the safety, education, and future of their children at home.

Her efforts are aligned with Project RISE Edo State, a flagship initiative combating child trafficking, abuse, and cultism through youth empowerment, education, and community engagement.

Director-General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Hon. Lucky Agazuma, applauded the First Lady’s compassion and the swift action taken by state authorities. He affirmed that Iwinosa would continue to receive reintegration support as part of her recovery journey.

“Thanks to Mrs. Okpebholo’s empathy and effective coordination across agencies, a vulnerable life has been rescued,” Agazuma said. “This sends a strong message: Edo State stands united against trafficking, exploitation, and child abuse.”

Project RISE coordinator, Uyi Uriesi, said the rescue marked a turning point, reflecting the state’s growing commitment to protecting its youth through prevention, partnerships, and community action.

“The First Lady’s leadership embodies the spirit of our mission—to build a safer, stronger Edo State where every young person can thrive without fear,” Uriesi added.
