The Edo State Government has dethroned three traditional rulers across Etsako West and Etsako East Local Government Areas over alleged violations of established traditional and legal succession procedures.

A statement issued in Benin by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Umar Ikhilor, on Monday confirmed the removal of Umoru Inusa Umoru as the Aidenogie of South Ibie in Etsako West. His removal was reportedly due to the discovery that the Aidenogie stool was not vacant prior to his appointment. Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi was immediately reinstated to the position.

In Etsako East, Lukman Akemokue was removed as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella for allegedly contravening succession rules established under customary declarations and failing to comply with Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979.

Also removed was Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, who served as the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom in Agenebode. His dethronement followed a prior suspension, reportedly linked to a series of kidnappings and killings in his domain.

According to the statement, the Edo State Executive Council approved the decisions during its meeting on Tuesday, April 29.

The government stated that preparations are underway for the lawful selection of new traditional rulers for Okpella and Uwano Kingdom. Residents in the affected communities were urged to remain calm as efforts continue to ensure peace, unity, and stability across the state.
