Edo Govt Shuts Shrines, Declares Cult Leaders Wanted in Statewide Crackdown
In a sweeping offensive against cultism and violent crime, the Edo State Government has sealed multiple shrines and declared suspected cult leaders wanted following deadly clashes in parts of the state.
The latest operation, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers,” led security forces to a hidden shrine in Egbaen, Egor LGA, early Wednesday morning. Though the premises were deserted, officers discovered a concealed ritual chamber containing a white casket and fetish items allegedly used for cult initiation.
The shrine was immediately sealed, with officials vowing to dismantle both the spiritual and operational infrastructure enabling cult activities in the state.
The crackdown follows a violent outbreak in Evboyare, Uhunmwode LGA, where rival cult groups — the Eiye and Maphite confraternities — engaged in a deadly street fight that left one man, identified as Festus, dead.
Security operatives have since declared Felix Aigbedion, an alleged Maphite leader, wanted for allegedly orchestrating the fatal attack. His residence has been sealed as investigations continue.
In a related raid, authorities recovered two locally made firearms from a poultry facility believed to be used as an improvised armoury for cult members. The violence left homes riddled with bullets, vehicles damaged, and residents fleeing for safety.
Coordinator of the operation, Idemudia Noah, said the government under Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to eradicating cultism and restoring public safety.
“Cultists must renounce violence or leave Edo State. We are coming for anyone who threatens peace,” he warned.
Investigators also uncovered disturbing reports of extortion during initiation rites, including forced money transfers from victims.
The government has urged the public to report suspicious activities and assured that the crackdown will continue across all affected communities.
