The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commended Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his decisive response following the recent killing of 16 people in Uromi.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Rafsanjani, praised the governor’s handling of the tragic incident, describing his actions as necessary for restoring law and order.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Governor Okpebholo visited the families of the victims, offering condolences and reaffirming his commitment to justice. In response to the tragedy, he suspended all vigilance groups in the state and dismissed the Commander of the State Security Corps, Friday Ibadin.
NAN further reports that the decision came after it was revealed that the vigilance group responsible for the killings had been operating illegally.
“As an organisation dedicated to promoting good governance, rule of law, and human rights protection, CISLAC fully supports the governor’s swift actions, particularly the dissolution of unregulated vigilance groups that pose a threat to public safety,” Rafsanjani said.
He lauded the state government’s swift investigation, which has already resulted in the arrest of 14 suspects, and welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s assurance that security agencies are working to ensure justice is served.
Rafsanjani also acknowledged Okpebholo’s determination to bring justice to the victims and their families, emphasizing that all perpetrators must be prosecuted.
“The collaboration between the Edo and Kano State Governments serves as an exemplary model of leadership, demonstrating unity, compassion, and firm decision-making in times of crisis,” he noted.
He urged leaders across Nigeria to draw lessons from the tragedy, emphasizing the importance of strong governance and cross-regional solidarity in maintaining national peace.
Additionally, the CISLAC executive director commended the bravery of Edo residents, particularly those in Uromi, who risked their lives to assist victims during the attack.
“Their selfless actions embody the values of empathy, courage, and unity, reinforcing the collective spirit that binds Nigerians together,” he added.
