The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 44 individuals suspected of internet fraud in multiple raids conducted across Enugu and Anambra States.
The arrests, made by the Enugu Zonal Directorate, were confirmed in a statement released by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, on Saturday in Abuja.
According to Oyewale, the suspects were detained on Sept. 28 and 29 following intelligence reports linking them to fraudulent online activities. The suspects are alleged to have used social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to deceive their victims.
“Preliminary investigations show that some of the suspects created fake identities to lure foreign nationals into fraudulent romantic relationships, while others were found with counterfeit documents on their devices,” Oyewale said.
The EFCC recovered laptops and advanced mobile phones during the raids. The suspects are set to face charges in court once investigations are concluded.
