The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Wahab and Raheem Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Chief Razaq Okoya, for questioning over alleged abuse of the naira.

The brothers are scheduled to appear at the commission’s Lagos office on Monday, January 13, 2025, following public outrage sparked by a promotional video for Raheem’s song, Credit Alert. The video showed the duo dressed in white agbadas, dancing while a mobile policeman held bundles of crisp ₦1,000 notes, which they sprayed into the air.

The video, widely criticized on social media, drew condemnation for perceived disregard of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) anti-naira abuse policies. Many Nigerians questioned whether the brothers would face repercussions due to their family’s influence.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officer involved in the video had been detained. Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi stated that the officer’s actions were under investigation.

The EFCC, in an invitation signed by the Acting Director of the Lagos Directorate, Michael Wetkas, directed the Okoya brothers to report to its Special Operations Team at 15A Awolowo Road by 10 a.m.

Raheem Okoya has since issued a public apology via his X (formerly Twitter) account:
“To the Nigerian people, my actions were not intended to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support as I had no intention of raising such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”

The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the invitation, saying, “Yes, they have been invited.”

The incident has reignited discussions about accountability and the enforcement of financial laws among Nigeria’s elite.
