EFCC Summons Nigerien Groom, Family Over Naira Spraying at Kano Wedding

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Ibrahim Mohammad, a Nigerien groom, and members of his family following a viral video showing naira notes being sprayed at a wedding in Kano on October 24.

Initial reports mistakenly linked the incident to the wedding of Senator Danjuma Goje’s daughter, but investigations by the EFCC clarified that the naira spraying took place at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah. In a statement on its official X handle, the EFCC noted that Zannah’s mother confirmed the video, identifying the groom’s family from Niger Republic as responsible for the currency display.

“The Commission’s attention was drawn to a viral video where naira notes were freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano State on Friday, October 24, 2024,” the statement read. “Our investigation confirmed that this naira abuse took place at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah, not at Senator Goje’s daughter’s wedding.”

The EFCC further disclosed it has invited Mohammad and those involved in spraying the currency to appear at its national headquarters in Abuja for questioning, as the agency continues to uphold Nigeria’s laws against naira abuse.

In recent actions, the EFCC has prosecuted notable figures for naira abuse, including celebrity bartender Cubana Chief Priest, who reached a settlement by forfeiting N10 million, and crossdresser Bobrisky, who received a six-month jail sentence. The EFCC continues to enforce currency respect laws amid heightened scrutiny on financial conduct at public events.
