The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Olanrewaju Ishola, has ordered the release of all individuals detained during the 4th anniversary of the #EndSARS protests at the Lekki Tollgate on Sunday.
The spokesperson for the Lagos Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the release in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, though he did not specify the number of individuals detained.
“All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was present at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to personally oversee their release,” Hundeyin stated.
The #EndSARS movement, which began on Oct. 20, 2020, was sparked by widespread public outcry against the abuses and misconduct of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian police. Although the protests led to the disbandment of SARS, they were marked by violent incidents, including attacks on police officers and the destruction of government property, including police stations and public buses.
