Amb. Felix Ihonre, Director-General of the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival (EFCF), has called on President Bola Tinubu, as the Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, to prioritize access to three daily meals for every ECOWAS citizen within the next five years.
Ihonre made this appeal during the Post-Festival Stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, stressing that zero tolerance for hunger across West Africa is a core mission of the EFCF. The recent food and cultural festival, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, from Oct. 6-11, showcased the importance of food security across the region.
“We believe President Tinubu has the influence needed to drive this initiative and ensure that every family in the ECOWAS region has access to three square meals a day,” Ihonre stated, underscoring the need for government commitment to address hunger on a regional scale.
To support this vision, Ihonre highlighted the EFCF’s Agropreneurship Legacy Project, which aims to establish food security hubs across ECOWAS countries. Each hub would include demonstration farms, processing facilities, and training centers for youth and women. The project is designed to reduce seasonal food waste, store surplus for dry-season farming, and promote export opportunities for West African agricultural products.
“This project will empower our communities and improve food security across the region,” Ihonre added, explaining that the initiative aims to be fully operational within five years, contributing to ECOWAS’s goals of hunger eradication and economic growth.
