European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas has expressed hope that EU foreign ministers will reach an agreement to gradually suspend economic sanctions on Syria.

Speaking on Monday ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Kallas outlined a proposal for a step-by-step “roadmap” to address the issue.

EU diplomats emphasized that the plan involves suspending sanctions rather than permanently lifting them, as a cautious measure pending clearer developments in Syria.

“If the EU begins to gradually lift the sanctions, the new leadership in Damascus must take responsibility for rebuilding the country,” Kallas said. She noted that the EU is prepared to respond positively if Syria demonstrates progress.

Kallas also hinted at the possibility of reopening the EU’s embassy in Damascus to ensure direct monitoring of the situation. “To really have our eyes and ears on the ground,” she added.
