The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a federal lawmaker, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, following an alleged assault on a Bolt driver in Abuja.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed Ikwechegh’s detention at the Maitama Police Station, stating, “He is currently undergoing questioning.”

According to the police statement issued on Monday, the incident was reported by driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the statement reads.

The FCT Police Command expressed deep concern over the lawmaker’s reaction to law enforcement during the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement,” the statement added.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement assured.

The incident has raised questions about respect for law enforcement and accountability among public officials.
