Security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) arrested 15 beggars and 19 scavengers on Monday as part of a citywide operation aimed at addressing safety and sanitation concerns.

The joint security effort included the Police, Military, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other paramilitary agencies. Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, leading the operation, stated the arrests followed a directive from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who has vowed to rid Abuja of street begging and other unauthorized activities.

Describing the operation as a “national assignment,” Disu said the crackdown will continue for two weeks, during which the security team will reassess and enhance their strategies. He assured that the enforcement team would carry out the directive with professionalism.

Mr. Adamu Gwary, Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, confirmed that the operation will be conducted around the clock. He noted that arrests were made in areas including Airport Road, Kubwa, Gwarimpa, Dei Dei, Asokoro, AYA, Nyanya, Karu, and Jikwoyi. Gwary reported that no beggars were found in the city center, as many had fled in anticipation of the sweep.

Kaka Bello, Head of Enforcement for the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, added that the operation will also address roadside trading and illegal activities by technicians, aiming to restore order in the city.

Regarding those arrested, Dr. Sani Rabe, Director of Social Welfare at FCT Administration, stated that they would be taken to a rehabilitation center. “Those willing to learn skills will be given training opportunities for self-empowerment, while others may be repatriated to their home states,” he said.

Last week, Minister Wike announced plans to launch a new security initiative to remove street beggars from Abuja, citing concerns about the city’s image and potential security risks.
