FEC Pays Tribute to Late Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni, Hails His Legacy
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd.), a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who died at the age of 82.
In a condolence message issued on Friday in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, described the late army general as a patriot whose contributions to Nigeria’s development remain unforgettable. The statement was signed by Mr. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office.
Useni served as the Minister of FCT and later as Minister of Transport during the military regime of Gen. Sani Abacha. Reflecting on his tenure, Akume noted, “Late General Useni served the nation meritoriously in the implementation of the master plan of the FCT during its budding stage.”
The SGF also described Useni as a “quintessential army general” whose selfless service to promoting peace and unity would be remembered for generations. He called on younger military officers to emulate Useni’s enviable track record and dedication to national service.
Highlighting Useni’s transition into politics, Akume praised his commitment to public service, which saw him elected as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2015.
The SGF extended condolences to the Government and people of Plateau State, the late general’s immediate family, and all Nigerians mourning his loss. He prayed for the repose of Useni’s soul, describing him as a “military icon” whose legacy of dedication and service would endure.
