Female Suicide Bomber Kills 24 in Borno Food Joint Blast
At least 24 people were killed and several others injured after a female suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a crowded food joint in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State on Friday night.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident on Saturday. He said the attacker targeted residents who had gathered in large numbers to purchase food.
“The explosion occurred at a food joint where many people had gathered. The blast caused multiple casualties. The body of the suicide bomber was torn apart by the explosion, with only the head recovered,” Daso said.
A joint response team comprising the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters was immediately deployed to the scene.
He added that the area was cordoned off and searched, but no additional explosive devices were found.
According to Daso, the injured victims were taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
Medical personnel on duty confirmed the deaths, he said, adding that efforts are underway to identify the victims and notify their families for burial in accordance with religious customs.
Security has been intensified in Konduga and nearby communities to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
